Portuguese colonizers. Also, slaves brought from Africa in the
18th century and, after that was abolished, indentured
laborers from China, India and the East Indies created ethnically
diverse populations speaking languages from around the world.
Economies
have large tourism sectors, enjoy substantial US and European investment,
and trade local goods such as petroleum, iron ore, sugar, coffee and
banannas.
