| Country Overview | Bhutan
is a landlocked country located between China and India in Southern Asia,
with a total land area of 47,000 sq km. The climate varies from tropical
at lower elevations to severly cold in the mountains which reach
an elevation of 7,553 m at Kula Kangri. Bhutan is translated as Land of
the Thunder Dragon due to the hazards of it's mountainous terrain and
fierce storms;
Government
type is a monarchy, with King Jigme Singye Wangchuck acting as chief of state
since 1972. He, Chairman of the Council of Ministers Sangay Ngedup and the
cabinet reside in the capital of Thimphu;
Population
is 900 thousand with a 3.1% rate of natural increase;
Language
is officially Dzongkha, which the government has recently recognized
and promoted as the national language. Eighteen other languages are
spoken in this Himalayan Kingdom;
Economy
is one of the world's smallest and least developed, with most people living
in rural areas, making a living from agriculture and forestry. The economy has
close ties to India, which receives 95% of Bhutan's exports, including
cardamom, gypsum, timber and electricity;
