Stories• Mystical Japan: A Visit to Miyajima Island (August 2002)
Traveling is one of my passions. I love exploring and experiencing new
cultures. As an undergraduate, I was fortunate to study art in Rome, Italy
for a semester. The art of Bernini and Caravaggio filled my heart and soul
as I wandered the cobblestone streets of Rome. I backpacked throughout Europe
that year and savored the beauty and culture that Europe offers.
Subsequently, I returned to Europe many times, visiting over fifteen
countries, and eventually expanding my horizons to include Japan and the
Middle East. I hope to visit Southeast Asia, Singapore, Turkey, and Egypt in
the future.
I believe travel helps you become a better citizen of the world. Meeting
people from different walks of life, learning about their beliefs, and
sharing moments in their culture helps to make our brief time on this planet
more meaningful. As a photographer I try to capture the small things that
make a place special. A kind old merchant, a giggling child, a busy street
corner are all things I attempt to freeze in time to capture the essence of
the places I visit.
As an art educator in an inner city high school, I try to encourage my
students to explore the world through the art of different cultures.
Hopefully, the seeds I plant will blossom in the future so that they may
explore the world through travel and art too!
